SESAR workshop highlights passenger-centric digital airports and multimodality
More than 80 experts from aviation, transport, research and policy gathered in Athens to discuss how to make multimodal travel more seamless, resilient and passenger-focused with SESAR Joint Undertaking projects.
The SESAR projects Engage 2, FASTNet and JARVIS – along with the SESAR Joint Undertaking member Athens International Airport – organised a workshop highlighting the importance of moving to a system focused on end-to-end passenger-centric journeys, rather than current system-driven operations.
Participants agreed that integrated data sharing, common standards and clearer governance are essential for developing real-time, door-to-door journey management. The current fragmented landscape across air, rail, and other modes of transport limits visibility, predictability and coordination, whereas a system of single-ticketing and multi-modal platforms, supported by AI-driven tools such as digital ‘travel companions’, could improve predictability, provide alternatives during disruption, and simplify the passenger experience.
The event featured a strong presence of SESAR Joint Undertaking projects working on multimodality and passenger experience, including ASTAIR, HERON, JARVIS, MAIA, FASTNet, MultiModX, ORCI, PEACOCK, PRIAM, SIGN-AIR and TravelWise (of which ACI EUROPE is a member), highlighting the breadth of ongoing innovation and the value of collaboration across the portfolio.
