EUROCONTROL and EASA issue guidance on drone integration in airspace
EUROCONTROL and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency have published two new Electronic Conspicuity (EC) use cases aimed at improving safety in increasingly shared European airspace, particularly around airports and drone operations.
Developed with aviation stakeholders, the guidance supports better traffic awareness for pilots and safer integration of drones alongside manned aircraft. The first use case focuses on air-to-air visibility, enabling aircraft equipped with EC technology to electronically detect nearby traffic and improve situational awareness. The second addresses drone operations in U-space environments without air traffic control, allowing drone operators to receive information on nearby manned aircraft through U-space Service Providers.
The initiative supports a harmonised European approach to Electronic Conspicuity, helping airports, operators and service providers prepare for growing mixed airspace operations while reducing collision risks through interoperable technologies. It aims to align requirements across Europe through harmonised guidance, encouraging adoption of interoperable technologies and supporting pilots, operators, manufacturers and service providers.
