EASA issues guidance on use of Jet A aircraft fuel in Europe
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued new guidance to help airports and airlines safely manage the potential use of Jet A aircraft fuel in Europe amid supply pressures linked to the situation in the Middle East and Persian Gulf.
Traditionally, European airports operate using Jet A-1 fuel, but stakeholders are now assessing whether Jet A fuel sourced from other global markets could help avoid shortages.
EASA’s Safety Information Bulletin highlights the operational differences between the two fuel grades, particularly Jet A’s higher freezing point, and calls on airports, ground handlers and airlines to review fuel handling procedures and communication processes. The European Commission has also published guidance outlining regulatory flexibilities to support the aviation sector during the disruption: more information is available in this month’s Bulletin.
