SESAR JU backs a new wave of research projects with EUR 410 million to upgrade Europe’s skies
The SESAR Joint Undertaking has just given the green light to a new round of research projects under its Digital European Sky programme. The 20 selected exploratory research projects will look into a wide range of novel concepts, from quantum computing for real-time trajectory optimisation and quantum sensing for precise navigation, to AI-driven climate impact modelling, automated decision-support systems, and explainable AI for safe, resilient operations.
Alongside these, 25 industrial research projects will advance key transformation levers such as trajectory-based operations, automation, and next-generation ATM service provision, as well as solutions that strengthen resilience to GNSS jamming and spoofing, improve climate-neutral operations, and provide better situational awareness and conflict detection for drones. The projects were selected through a 2025 call for proposals, followed by a thorough evaluation carried out by independent experts.
This call for proposals showcases a broad range of beneficiaries, with entities from 26 EU Member States and 8 countries associated to Horizon Europe taking part across the portfolio: a clear sign of just how pan-European the SESAR programme truly is.
