Global carbon standard for airports reaches major milestone with over 500 certified airports
Airport Carbon Accreditation, the leading program for carbon management by airports, is celebrating a significant achievement on the journey to decarbonise the aviation industry. More than 500 airports worldwide have now achieved certification under the programme, meeting the stringent requirements set by its six accreditation levels.
ACI EUROPE joined the celebration, marking the fact that over half of all climate-smart airports globally – 279 – are in Europe.
The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme was launched in 2009 by ACI EUROPE, with only 17 pioneering airports initially achieving accreditation. Since then, it has become the global standard for carbon management in the airport industry. This milestone of 500 certified airports showcases the programme’s enduring strength and relevance in driving concrete and performance-driven climate action by airports. It plays a vital role in ensuring that the industry progresses towards its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
