Advancing recovery: almost half of Europe’s airports back to pre-pandemic passenger levels

According to the March & Q1 Airport Traffic Report released by ACI EUROPE earlier this month, almost half of Europe’s airports have reached or surpassed their pre-pandemic passenger levels.

Remarkably, passenger traffic in the first quarter of 2023 was only 10.6% below the levels seen in the pre-pandemic period of Q1 2019. While international passenger traffic has been leading the recovery and is now nearing pre-pandemic levels, with a decline of only 9%, domestic passenger traffic is lagging behind at 18.5%. This discrepancy suggests that the market dynamics are changing due to various factors, including evolving consumer behaviors and modal shifts.

The data reveals that by the end of March, 45% of Europe’s airports had recovered or even surpassed their pre-pandemic volumes, a significant increase from the 40% reported in February. This positive trend showcases the resilience and adaptability of the aviation industry as it continues to rebound from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
