Cologne Bonn Airport opens Germany’s first fully CT-equipped security checkpoint

Cologne Bonn Airport has completed the transformation of its central security checkpoint, becoming the first major airport in Germany to equip all of its screening lanes with computed tomography technology. The redesigned facility, which involved an investment of around €25 million, features 11 lanes where passengers no longer need to remove liquids or electronic devices from their hand luggage, with the permitted liquid limit raised to up to two litres per container.

The upgrade forms the centrepiece of the airport’s “Next Chapter” modernisation programme, which has been delivering phased improvements across terminal facilities since 2025. Alongside the new CT scanners, the checkpoint introduces improved lighting and wayfinding, redesigned acoustics, and a dedicated Kids Lane allowing younger passengers to manage their own luggage independently through child-friendly platforms.

The investment follows the airport’s assumption of direct responsibility for organising passenger and baggage screening in January 2025.
