SESAR explores how quantum technologies could shape the future of air traffic management
The SESAR Joint Undertaking is investigating how emerging quantum technologies could support the next generation of air traffic management (ATM), with four new exploratory research projects examining potential applications in optimisation, cybersecurity, and navigation resilience.
As quantum computing emerges as a new avenue for future operational benefits, SESAR is assessing how quantum applications could benefit Europe’s increasingly complex skies – and assist with growing traffic volumes, drone integration and greater demands for efficiency and resilience.
The selected projects – JANUS, NEXT-QCM, PostQat and QUASAN – will explore the potential of quantum computing for trajectory optimisation, quantum machine learning, post-quantum cryptography for secure communications, and quantum sensing for improved navigation in environments affected by GNSS interference.
Together, the projects represent almost EUR 4 million in European investment to build knowledge around how quantum technologies could contribute to the future Digital European Sky. By exploring these technologies now, SESAR JU aims to help Europe prepare for future aviation challenges while ensuring that safety, cybersecurity, certification and human oversight remain central to ATM innovation.
