Burgas Airport kicks off summer season with renovated runway
Burgas Airport has officially reopened its renovated runway, marking a major milestone for Bulgarian tourism and aviation ahead of the busy summer season.
The upgraded runway was inaugurated on 29 April 2026 with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, lighting display and the symbolic arrival of the first flight from Sofia following a six-month refurbishment programme valued at nearly €60 million. The large-scale project, delivered by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management, is expected to secure the airport’s operational reliability and connectivity for at least the next two decades.
The reopening ceremony brought together government officials, airport executives, diplomats and media representatives, highlighting the strategic importance of Burgas Airport as a gateway to Bulgaria’s Southern Black Sea coast. Officials described the investment as a critical step in strengthening the country’s transport and tourism infrastructure while ensuring continued access to key international markets.
A fully modernised drainage system and specialised high-durability asphalt surface are expected to improve safety and reduce operational disruptions during adverse weather conditions. The project represents the most significant single investment in the history of the airport, amounting to over 60 million EUR, and the largest single private investment ever undertaken in Bulgaria‘s airport infrastructure, marking the beginning of a new stage in the development of the regional economy.
