ACI launches call for the modernisation of global slot rules
ACI EUROPE has joined ACI World’s call for the modernisation of global airport slot rules to better address growing capacity constraints, competition and connectivity needs.
Europe is home to half of the world’s most congested airports, yet the foundations of the current slot allocation system date back to 1974. With the number of congested airports globally increasing by 36% over the past decade and passenger traffic expected to nearly double by 2046, ACI argues that the system must evolve.
In a new white paper from ACI World, several key reforms are proposed in order to make this evolution happen. These include giving airports a structured voice in managing scarce capacity, increasing transparency around how slots are allocated, used and exchanged, and periodically reviewing airlines’ continued access to historic slots.
ACI EUROPE Director General Olivier Jankovec stressed the urgency for Europe in particular, where capacity pressures are particularly acute.
‘Policymakers must act,’ he said. ‘Get this right, and aviation will continue to drive economic growth and opportunity for generations to come.’
Modernisation does not mean replacing the global slot system. It means making sure the system can evolve as airport capacity becomes increasingly scarce.
