ACI EUROPE Director General reveals challenges and opportunities for aviation in Bosnia and Herzegovina
ACI EUROPE Director General Olivier Jankovec highlighted the challenges and opportunities facing aviation in Bosnia and Herzegovina during a visit to Sarajevo this month, calling for decisive policy action to support the country’s continued growth in air connectivity.
Meeting government and aviation stakeholders, Jankovec pointed to Sarajevo International Airport’s strong performance, with passenger traffic now 28.6% above 2019 levels and air connectivity up 40%. Bosnia and Herzegovina now records the third-best connectivity performance among non-EU+ countries.
ACI EUROPE identified four priorities to build on this momentum:
- abolishing the tax on departing passengers;
- ensuring competitive traffic and connectivity incentives to attract airline capacity;
- supporting Sarajevo Airport’s long-term development through its 2028–2048 Master Plan; and
- accelerating implementation of EU aviation legislation under the European Common Aviation Area Agreement.
Discussions also covered ways to facilitate passenger flows and further integrate Bosnia and Herzegovina into the European aviation system, including One Stop Security, infrastructure investment, decarbonisation and closer institutional coordination.
‘Removing fiscal barriers, supporting connectivity, investing in capacity and completing regulatory integration with Europe will allow aviation to deliver even more for the country – economically, socially and strategically,’ said Jankovec.
