Zurich Airport tests solar diesel on airside bus
Zurich Airport has begun using solar diesel to power one of its passenger buses in regular operations. The fuel, supplied by Swiss company Synhelion, was produced at the company’s demonstration plant using renewable energy, CO₂ and water. The 190-litre barrel delivered to the airport was enough to keep the bus running for around twelve days.
The trial is part of Zurich Airport’s broader effort to reach net zero for ground transport, especially for vehicles that are not yet suitable for electrification. Since the solar diesel works with existing engines and infrastructure, no technical modifications were needed. The airport said the test demonstrates the real potential of synthetic fuels in everyday airport operations.
