Volotea joins VINCI Airports’ forest carbon sink programme
A partnership agreement has been signed by Volotea and VINCI Airports in order to accelerate forest carbon sequestration. Volotea has become the first airline to join VINCI Airports’ recently launched forest carbon sink programme, which aims to offset both its own and customers and partners residual carbon emissions.
The first project under the programme, conducted in partnership with the French National Forest Office and the Rhône Departmental Council, is located about 30 kilometers away from Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport, in the Cantinière forest. It involves restoring, reforesting, maintaining and managing a 3.6-hectare plot of land with locally resilient species selected for their strong capacity to adapt to water stress and absorb CO2. This first forest carbon sink project will sequester more than 500 tons of CO2 over the plants’ growth period thanks to photosynthesis, with the aim of achieving the Low Carbon Label certification.
The partnership with Volotea reflects VINCI Airports’ commitment to addressing its Scope 3 emissions and supporting airlines in their efforts to decarbonise.
