Sweden to abolish aviation tax in 2025
The Swedish government plans to abolish its aviation tax on 1 July 2025 to lower flight prices and stimulate demand for air travel.
Introduced in 2018, the tax charged passengers between €7 and €44, depending on their destination. Swedish politicians believe that scrapping the tax will make flights more affordable, increase demand, and enhance airlines’ competitiveness. Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO of Swedavia, welcomed the decision, arguing that the tax hindered Sweden’s flight accessibility, competitiveness, and growth. He also criticised the tax for failing to support climate transition by treating all fuels, including biofuels, equally.
Sweden’s decision to scrap the tax is seen as a significant step toward enhancing the competitiveness of its aviation sector and supporting the post-pandemic rebound.
