Slice of European Commission funding set aside to modernise European airports
Under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) fund, the European Commission has designated nearly €2.8 billion in EU grants, selecting 94 transport projects to share this funding. While rail has received the largest share of the funding (77% of the total), several key air traffic management projects have received funding in order to ‘reduce congestion, lower emissions, and improve the overall air travel experience’. These projects cover activities including:
- The future construction of a multimodal passenger hub located at Nice Airport.
- The upgrade of the existing stormwater drainage system to reduce potential flooding disruptions at Budapest Airport.
- The Europe-wide implementation of the EU Common Project One (CP1) regulation aims to improve transport flows among 15 EU Member States, with positive effects in terms of cohesion, efficiency, sustainability, and user benefits.
The Commission will now proceed with the formal adoption of the selection decision, after which CINEA will begin preparing grant agreements for the selected projects. These agreements are expected to be finalised by October 2025.
