Rotterdam The Hague Airport opens liquid hydrogen storage facility
Rotterdam The Hague Airport has officially opened a liquid hydrogen storage facility at its site for research purposes. The new installation has been developed as part of the TULIPS project. It is part of the DutcH₂ Aviation Hub, enabling the airport and its partners to safely store and handle liquid hydrogen: an essential step in exploring hydrogen as a future aviation fuel and energy source. The facility supports ongoing research into how airports can integrate hydrogen into ground operations, and ultimately, aircraft refuelling.
The storage system was developed in collaboration with industry and research partners, and its design focuses on strict safety and handling standards for cryogenic hydrogen. The airport says the facility will allow a detailed study of liquid hydrogen behaviour under real operational conditions, helping to inform future infrastructure, safety protocols and supply chain considerations.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport views this initiative as part of its broader commitment to sustainability and innovation, particularly in support of low-emission aviation technologies. By establishing this storage capability now, the airport aims to be better prepared for future hydrogen use as the sector seeks to reduce carbon emissions.
