Riga Airport revises road map for achieving zero CO2 emissions
RIX Riga Airport has revised its roadmap to achieve zero CO2 emissions, setting an ambitious new target of 2035, ahead of ACI EUROPE’s original 2050 goal.
In order to do so, Riga Airport will replace the current diesel-powered passenger buses at the airport with electric buses, and in 2025 will begin transitioning from fossil diesel to synthetic fuels – increasing by at least 10% each year, with a complete phase-out by 2035. The amount of green energy purchased by the Airport is expected to increase by an average of 10% annually, while solar power generation from the airport’s solar parks is expected to reach 14% of the total electricity needs of the company by 2026.
Chairperson of the Board of Riga Airport Laila Odina notes that the airport is ‘ready to set a much more ambitious timeline to achieve Net Zero… aiming to be certified to the next level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.’
