Paris-CDG: 50 years of history and innovation
Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Established based on General de Gaulle’s vision to accommodate the surging demand for air travel, CDG was a solution to the anticipated overflow of Orly Airport. Chosen for its proximity to Paris and potential for regional development, Roissy transformed from a rural commune to a leading global aviation hub.
The construction journey, beginning in 1964, was monumental, reshaping the region’s landscape. Despite the challenges, including demolishing landmarks like Mortières Farm, CDG’s inauguration in 1974 marked a new chapter in aviation and regional development. The airport’s growth into an international nexus reflects a successful blend of innovation, foresight, and resilience.
The Ministry of Culture has recognised CDG airport as a 20th-century heritage site. Its historical significance and role in connecting millions of passengers globally make it an essential economic and societal node for France.
