Operational impact of volcanic disruption simulated
Network Manager EUROCONTROL has worked with the European Aviation Crisis Coordination Cell to simulate and test the effect of a modern day Eyjafjallajökull-like eruption, and found a much less severe impact than was the case in 2010. 11 years after the Icelandic volcano lead to 104,000 flights being cancelled, a simular situation today would see that number halved.
The Director General of EUROCONTROL, Eamonn Brennan, attributed this to the collaborative efforts delviered by EUROCONTROL in close cooperation with the European Commission, Member States and the aviation community. You can read the full story here.
