New Vilnius terminal to produce 7 times less CO2
The beginning of 2023 has seen the start of construction of the new terminal at Vilnius airport, which will be ready to welcome passengers in the first few months of 2025.
The new terminal marks the beginning of a big change, with solutions oriented towards all areas of operation, including environmental protection, as specified by Kistrina Greiciute, Environmental Project Manager at Lithuanian Airports. Among the most important expected changes are the reduction of thermal energy, improvement of energy efficiency, installation of a solar power plant, smart lighting systems, and reduction of CO2 emissions.
Thermal energy will be reduced thanks to a well-designed system of glass partitions (South and Southeast oriented) and sunlight retaining partitions that will help with warmth during summer and reduce air conditioning consumption.
The construction of the new terminal will result in a reduction of CO2 emissions per passenger by up to seven times. Currently, emissions per passenger are 200g, but they will decrease to 30g.
Smart lighting solutions will be used as well, with LED lights installed and motion sensors for the interior spaces. For the outside, the lighting systems will be linked to outdoor light with sensors allowing for the regulation of the lighting.
