New study highlights need for boost in European SAF production
The European aviation industry has published a toolkit to fast-track Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production in Europe as a way to accelerate decarbonisation.
The new report by ICF highlights how current projections for SAF production in Europe fall short of ambitions, meaning that increasing quantities of SAF will need to be imported to meet EU mandates.
Within the report, key players in Europe’s aviation industry, including airlines, airports, and manufacturers, have outlined to EU policymakers seven critical measures to stimulate SAF production in Europe and overcome the challenges facing the European SAF industry. These measures aim to buck the negative projection for Europe and ensure SAF production meets EU demand in the coming years, including:
- The introduction of risk-sharing mechanisms to unlock private investments and reduce consumer costs
- The enhancement of financial support for advanced SAF facilities
- Prioritised access to feedstock and renewable electricity
- The refinement of existing mechanisms, such as the ReFuelEU Aviation mandate and ETS allowances
