New CORDIS publication showcases SESAR projects driving smarter, more connected airports
CORDIS, the European Commission’s primary source of information on EU-funded research and innovation, has released a new publication highlighting how projects supported by the SESAR Joint Undertaking are transforming airports into smarter, more connected hubs within Europe’s transport system.
The Projects Info Pack presents 12 projects that demonstrate how SESAR is enhancing airside efficiency, improving traffic management in and around airports, and enabling seamless multimodal travel. These projects contribute directly to the EU’s strategy for sustainable and smart mobility, which envisions door-to-door journeys combining different transport modes with minimal disruption – alongside supporting the EU Green Deal and Fit for 55 objectives through smarter, more efficient, and environmentally sustainable aviation.
By improving links between airports and rail or bus networks, the projects aim to reduce travel times and simplify transfers, including through integrated booking platforms for single-ticket multimodal journeys. At the same time, advances in digitalisation and artificial intelligence are being applied to boost operational efficiency, strengthen collaboration across airport stakeholders, and enhance resilience to disruptions. The initiatives also prepare airports for the integration of new technologies, including unpiloted aircraft, ensuring they continue to serve as vital hubs in Europe’s broader transport ecosystem.
