New cooperation agreement between EUROCONTROL and European Commission aims to address aviation sustainability and challenge of climate change
EUROCONTROL and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) have signed a new Cooperation Agreement to reinforce their long-standing collaboration on aviation sustainability and climate change.
The agreement particularly emphasises monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of non-CO₂ emissions, such as contrails and nitrogen oxides (NOx), within the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). This marks a significant step in providing a more holistic analysis of the climate impact of aviation, with a focus on emissions beyond carbon dioxide.
EUROCONTROL will continue supporting DG CLIMA with policy development and implementation by leveraging its technical expertise, IT infrastructure, and unique access to flight trajectory data. The organisation has been actively involved in climate-related initiatives since 2010, including supporting the EU ETS and the global CORSIA framework.
EUROCONTROL’s ongoing collaboration with DG CLIMA underscores the critical role of the aviation sector in the EU’s climate strategy, highlighting the shared goal of reducing emissions, and the proactive work of the aviation industry in ensuring sustainable aviation practices for the future.
