Lifelines urgently needed for Ukrainian airports
On 14 September, ACI EUROPE gathered its Ukrainian airport members with key European institutional and financial stakeholders in Brussels to discuss recovery and redevelopment challenges.
As the war drags on and continues to have a significant impact on aviation infrastructure across the country, Ukrainian airports’ ability to finance maintenance of infrastructure, the payroll of their people, as well as preparing for a swift resumption of operations once the peace is restored has been significantly weakened. The costs involved in rebuilding damaged airport infrastructure across Ukraine is currently estimated at over €200 million, while the financial needs to maintain operational readiness and a minimum of staff on a yearly basis stands at €52.8 million.
The meeting convened by ACI EUROPE aimed at reviewing and addressing these issues – while also charting the way forward for the long-term redevelopment of Ukrainian airports. It allowed to bring together for the first time Ukrainian airports, high-level representatives from the Ukrainian Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, the Ukrainian Ministry for Finance, the Ukrainian Civil Aviation Authority, UkSTATSE, the European Commission, EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency), Eurocontrol, the EIB (European Investment Bank) and the EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development).
