Istanbul Airport achieves milestone in global aviation history
On 17 April 2025, iGA Istanbul Airport made aviation history by becoming the first airport in Europe to operate three independent runways simultaneously. This advancement allows three aircraft to take off or land at the same time, significantly increasing the airport’s capacity and efficiency. The initiative reflects Türkiye’s commitment to enhancing its role as a global aviation hub.
The implementation of triple runway operations was the result of extensive planning and collaboration with international aviation authorities, including EUROCONTROL. Advanced technologies such as sophisticated radar systems, precision navigation aids, and robust air traffic control protocols have been integrated to ensure the safety and effectiveness of simultaneous operations.
This milestone not only boosts Istanbul Airport’s operational capacity but also sets a new standard for airports across Europe. By adopting such innovative practices, the airport enhances its position in global aviation and contributes to addressing the growing passenger demand for travel.
