Industry leaders and policymakers back plan to tackle emissions and delays in air traffic management
At the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) Annual Conference, European industry leaders and policymakers united in their backing of air traffic management (ATM) modernisation – as a way to cut both emissions and delays.
The Annual Conference offered a solid case study as to how the modernisation of Europe’s ATM is of wide-ranging benefit: reducing aviation’s carbon footprint, alleviating air traffic congestion, and ultimately delivering a greener, more efficient, and resilient airspace. This modernisation, occurring under the SESAR Joint Undertaking European ATM Master Plan, also holds significant value for the European economy – with estimations indicating that deploying SESAR solutions will generate a return on investment of €53 for every €1 invested by 2050.
Key European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to this modernisation. Andreas Boschen, Executive Director of SESAR JU, emphasised the importance of EU-level collaboration in transforming Europe’s skies, calling for increased investment and regulatory support. European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas highlighted SESAR’s role in driving sustainability and strengthening Europe’s technological industries. Poland’s Minister of Infrastructure, Dariusz Klimczak, underscored the strategic significance aviation holds for Europe’s economy and security, with the Polish EU Presidency (patrons of the Annual Conference) backing SESAR’s modernisation efforts to enhance competitiveness and ensure a safer, more sustainable airspace.
