Hydrogen technologies take centre stage at the 2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference 2024
The 2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference, co-organised by TULIPS, ACI EUROPE, To70, and hosted by Torino Airport, brought together key players from the aviation sector to explore the significant role of hydrogen technology in decarbonising airports and aviation. Held on 11 October 2024 at Torino Airport, the conference aimed at fostering a shared vision and understanding of how hydrogen technologies will drive the clean energy transition for both landside and airside operations. From ground handling to flight operations, hydrogen is set to transform the way airports operate, with an impact on supply chains and infrastructure requirements.
Experts from across the industry gathered to discuss long-term hydrogen strategies, sharing their insights on how collaboration between airports, airlines, and regulators is crucial for accelerating the transition. Representatives from DG DEFIS – European Commission, University of Torino, UK CAA, VINCI Airports, Schiphol, SEA Milano, Avinor, ZeroAvia, Beyond Aero, and easyJet discussed innovative hydrogen-powered solutions, including ground power units and hydrogen-fuelled airside vehicles, as well as the necessary infrastructure for these advancements.
The conference covered several key topics, including an inspiring presentation on how regional airports can lead the charge in advancing new energy aircraft and transforming into smart energy hubs. Another focus was the vision of Alliance for Zero Emission Aviation, which showcased a strategic plan to build a hydrogen ecosystem that not only cuts CO₂ emissions but also fosters competitiveness and innovation in aviation. Participants also presented the first results from hydrogen pilot projects, which are pushing the boundaries of innovation within the airport ecosystem through applications such as airside hydrogen production, and testing hydrogen within a commercial aircraft.
In addition to technical solutions, the event emphasised the importance of partnerships and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the adoption of hydrogen. Speakers highlighted key projects already underway, such as the TULIPS initiative1, which is making significant efforts in deploying hydrogen technologies in real-world airport settings.
Special thanks to Torino Airport, To70, and TULIPS for their cooperation and excellent organisation.
