How EUROCONTROL and UEFA are delivering a winning performance in the skies
The UEFA European Football Championship, known as the Euros, is currently being hosted in Germany – Europe’s third busiest State in terms of air traffic. Also being held during one of the peak summer months for aviation, the network is expecting to see up to 37,000 daily flights.
It is for this reason that EUROCONTROL and UEFA are collaborating in order to optimise planning for the arrival of teams, sponsors, and fans. With 51 matches played in 10 cities, this is no small task. A mix of challenges make air traffic congestion a key obstacle. Not only are approximately 2.5 million fans expected in Berlin alone (the hosts of the final), but the multi-city nature of the tournament has also led to record demand for flights to smaller airports. The need for increased flights affects airport and airspace capacity, as well as potentially clashing with rules and regulations on noise and flight curfews.
EUROCONTROL plan to work closely with UEFA to mitigate potential disruptions through the most efficient use of airspace, for a smooth and sustainable flow of air traffic.
Join us at the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly to hear more about the logistics of large sporting events in our keynote interview ‘UEFA & Airports – How Large Sporting Events and Airports Can Partner to Reinforce Their Value to Communities?’. Representatives of UEFA and iGA Istanbul Airport will explore how airports, tournament organisers and city authorities can partner for community development and leave a lasting legacy long after the final whistle.
