London Heathrow surpasses 8 million passengers in August, hitting historic record
London Heathrow Airport has reached a significant milestone, welcoming over 8 million passengers in August 2025. It is the first time a European hub airport has handled that many people in a single month. The airport also recorded its busiest day on 1 August, with more than 270,000 travellers, along with new daily records for both arrivals and departures.
Despite the high numbers, London Heathrow maintained a strong operational performance. Around 98 per cent of bags arrived with their passengers, and 96 per cent of travellers cleared security in under five minutes. Flight punctuality was also among the best seen at the airport, with fewer same-day cancellations and fewer passengers separated from their luggage.
Heathrow has warned, however, that further capacity is necessary – calling for support to move forward with its long-term expansion plans, including a new third runway that would be fully financed by private investment. Such expansion will boost UK trade growth, global connections, and help the UK economy as a whole – according to a recent study, Heathrow’s third runway could increase UK GDP by 0.43% by 2050.
