Ground Power Units supply energy to aircraft at Munich Airport
Munich Airport has launched battery-operated ‘Ground Power Units’ (eGPUs) to supply energy to aircraft. These eGPUs provide energy to aircraft parked at positions not connected to boarding bridges. Using eGPUs, aircraft can turn off their auxiliary power units, which traditionally run on kerosene, thereby avoiding emissions during downtime. This change is expected to prevent approximately 8,000 tonnes of CO2 annually at Munich Airport, further supporting its path toward its sustainability goals.
Alongside the ten emission-free electrically powered passenger buses already in operation at Munich airport, more eGPUs are planned for implementation by the end of the year – contributing to Munich Airport’s Net Zero by 2035 objective. By the end of 2024, Munich Airport plans to have 20 eGPUs in operation, reducing both noise and environmental pollution.
