Fiumicino Airport unveils Europe’s largest airport solar farm
Aeroporti di Roma has inaugurated a new solar farm at Fiumicino Airport, featuring 55,000 silicon panels. This 22 MWp plant, one of the largest airport-based photovoltaic systems globally, will significantly reduce the airport’s carbon footprint. The project aligns with ADR’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, twenty years ahead of the industry target.
The solar farm will generate over 30 million kWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power 30,000 Italian households. This €50 million investment is part of a broader initiative to enhance energy independence and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The airport aims to increase installed solar capacity to over 60 MWp in the coming years.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by government officials, industry leaders, and environmental representatives. The project was hailed as a significant step towards a more sustainable future for aviation and a key example of Italy’s leadership in renewable energy.
