Fiumicino Airport plans €9 billion expansion to reach 100 million passengers

Rome Fiumicino Airport has presented a €9 billion expansion plan aimed at increasing its annual capacity to 100 million passengers by 2046. The privately funded programme includes €5 billion for new infrastructure and €4 billion for upgrading existing facilities. The plans are expected to support the airport’s long-term growth and prepare it for increasing passenger demand.

A key part of the project is a new terminal complex with two boarding areas and 76 gates, together with a fourth runway. The existing first runway would be shortened, with part of the area eventually transformed into a public green and archaeological park. The plan also includes improvements to taxiways, aprons and road connections.

The airport is aiming to have the new runway completed by 2033, ahead of the expected increase in visitors to Rome and the Vatican for the Jubilee year. The project is currently awaiting final government approval, with ADR aiming to begin construction within two years.
