Fiumicino Airport launches first large-scale second-life battery system
Fiumicino Airport (Aeroporti di Roma) has launched PIONEER, the biggest second-life battery energy storage system in Italy. It reuses old electric car batteries to store energy from the airport’s 30 MW solar plant. Developed by Aeroporti di Roma with Enel X and Fraunhofer ISE, the system includes up to 762 used batteries and has a capacity of 2.5 MW and 10 MWh. It is the first time that a large system using different battery types has been installed at an airport.
The system stores extra solar energy during the day and releases it when demand is higher, such as in the evening. It also helps stabilise the electricity grid. Thanks to this reuse of the batteries, there’s no need to produce new ones. The system includes smart tools to monitor battery health and manage energy more efficiently. Over the next ten years, it could reduce CO2 emissions by about 16,000 tonnes.
