Facial recognition replaces boarding passes at BER airport
Berlin Brandenburg Airport has introduced a digital service called BER Traveller, which allows for biometric access control. This means that HON Circle Members and Senators of Lufthansa Group Airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, can now enjoy a fast and convenient experience at priority security control without the need to present their boarding pass.
To avail this service, passengers must first register their biometric data in the FastID app and subsequently receive an email invitation from their respective airline. Initially, this service is exclusively available to HON Circle Members and Senators of Lufthansa Group Airlines. However, there are plans to expand its availability to self-service machines, gate boarding, and lounge access.
The biometric service is voluntary, with decentralised storage of personal and biometric data in the passenger’s app. Passengers have complete control over their data and can choose to delete it at any time they wish.
The verification process is carried out by comparing photos taken by installed cameras with the passenger’s biometric data stored in the app, utilizing the facial recognition technology offered by FastID.
