EUROCONTROL completes trials to dynamically reduce restrictions for flight planning
The EUROCONTROL Network Manager has announced the completion of the first set of trials to dynamically reduce restrictions for flight planning to ensure more direct, more sustainable flights.
Working with air navigation service providers DSNA, ENAIRE, ENAV and Skyguide, and supported by airspace users, selected restrictions were relaxed for more than 2,500 flights. An average of 44kgs of fuel has been saved and 138kg CO2 emissions reduced, confirming that the improved measure could contribute significantly to lower aviation’s environmental impact.
The trials complement the EUROCONTROL NM initiative, in cooperation with ANSPs, to suspend temporarily more than 1,200 network restrictions when the COVID-19 pandemic first hit European aviation in March 2020. This allowed airspace users to improve their flight planning options and promoted more effective trajectories. These measures have been extended until 24 March 2022.
