EU SAF Clearing House aims to become one-stop-shop for sustainable fuel
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced its support for scaling up sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) through the newly operational EU SAF Clearing House.
The initiative aims to facilitate the deployment of SAF in the EU and internationally, as well as to streamline the approval process for new SAF pathways. This Clearing House serves as a comprehensive resource for fuel producers, offering assistance with ASTM D4054, the standard that covers the qualification and approval of new aviation turbine fuels and fuel additives. ASTM D4054 was developed to provide the producer of an alternative jet fuel with guidance regarding testing and property targets necessary to evaluate a candidate alternative jet fuel. The programme will assist with evaluations, including pre-screening, partial funding for testing, and report preparation.
Currently, SAF comprises less than 0.05% of total EU aviation fuel use, highlighting the need for a significant increase in supply to achieve decarbonisation goals. The EU SAF Clearing House will establish a network of testing facilities across Europe and provide guidance to fuel producers on environmental impact assessments and compliance with certification standards. Applications to join the project from interested fuel producers and testing facilities are welcome, via the link below.
