EU Entry-Exit System launches on 12 October 2025
The Entry/Exit System (EES) – an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay each time they cross the external borders of any of the following European countries using the system – went live on 12 October 2025.
29 European countries have started introducing the new digital border system on a phased roll-out, with authorities in each country deciding which Border Crossing Points the system should be deployed at and when. At the end of the progressive roll-out period (10 April 2026), the system will be fully functional at all Border Crossing Points – replacing physical passport stamps.
The EES provides national authorities with real-time information on who enters the EU and when, marking a significant step in modernising and strengthening the security of the EU’s borders. Once fully operational, the system will also detect overstayers and cases of document and identity fraud, ensuring a safer and more secure travel experience for all.
