Eindhoven Airport takes action to make baggage handling easier
Eindhoven Airport has taken steps to reduce the physical stress on baggage handlers. In December 2023, three transfer belts were installed to quickly and efficiently unload baggage from arriving flights. During Q1 2024, a trial lifting aid will be introduced to make it easier to load baggage onto departing flights. After a testing period, it will be decided when to install lifting aids at all 18 loading bays.
The handler Viggo is also testing a new lifting aid for the powerstow to make loading and unloading baggage on the aircraft easier. If successful, more will be ordered and put into service in Q3 2024. To increase automation, an electric tug has been installed to link carts together ergonomically, along with an automated baggage sorting system.
Eindhoven Airport and Viggo are also collaborating with TU/Delft on another project to make the work of ramp workers easier by reducing the lifting of passenger hold luggage. Sixteen students will conduct a 12-week research to develop a viable product that can be tested in an operational environment. The ultimate goal is to make lifting and moving baggage an effortless task for all baggage handlers.
