Edinburgh Airport powers up with Scotland’s first airside solar farm
Edinburgh Airport has opened one of the UK’s first solar farms located within the airfield. Covering eleven acres beside the runway, the site now provides around 27 per cent of the airport’s electricity. On some days this year, the airport was able to run entirely on solar power between 08:30 and 19:00, showing the potential of on-site renewable energy in daily operations.
The project is the first of its kind in Scotland and received £2.1 million in funding from the Scottish Government to support business decarbonisation. Developed in partnership with AMPYR Solar Europe, the farm began generating electricity in 2024 and is now in its first full year of operation. The airport, together with ASE, funded and built the facility.
The solar farm is part of Edinburgh Airport’s Greater Good sustainability strategy. Since 2019, the airport has cut its own emissions by 90 per cent and is currently the only Scottish airport with Level 4+ certification in the global Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. As part of the VINCI Airports network, Edinburgh is also helping achieve the target of net zero emissions at all UK and European airports by 2030.
