EASA releases survey on Ethics for AI in Aviation
Coinciding with EASA’s annual ‘AI Days’ event, EASA has released a survey on Ethics for Artificial Intelligence in Aviation – capturing the views of aviation professionals across Europe on the ethical considerations of deploying AI.
The survey explores eight AI application scenarios, measuring respondents’ levels of comfort, trust and acceptance in deploying AI in each specific scenario. Overall, professionals rated their acceptance of AI at 4.4 out of 7 – showing cautious optimism. Key findings include:
- Approximately 2/3rds of respondents expressed reservations, rejecting at least one AI scenario.
- The top concerns identified related to AI performance limits, data protection/privacy, accountability, and potential safety implications.
- A substantial majority of professionals called for robust regulation and supervision by EASA, as well as national aviation authorities, to guide AI integration safely and responsibly.
- Deskilling concerns: respondents were also concerned about the potential for human ability to degrade if AI took over tasks partially or fully.
Commenting on the report, Guillaume Soudain, EASA AI Programme Manager, said:
“AI offers tremendous opportunities to improve aviation safety and efficiency, but trust is critical. This survey underscores the importance of a balanced regulatory framework—one that ensures the highest level of safety for citizens while also fostering innovation and competitiveness in Europe’s aviation sector.”
