E-Project at Frankfurt Airport using charging infrastructure bidirectionally
Fraport is transitioning its vehicle fleet at Frankfurt Airport to electric power and expanding the charging infrastructure. The airport is exploring bidirectional charging technology, enabling electric vehicles to act as mobile power storage units that can feed any unused power back into the grid on an as-needed basis. This technology isn’t ready for large-scale use yet, and the interfaces also need to be standardised, particularly for special-purpose vehicles used for aircraft ground handling.
The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is supporting this initiative with over 5 million euros, and Fraport, along with its partners, is investing an additional 4.1 million euros. Their goal is to add 600 electric vehicles by 2026, and this bidirectional system will efficiently manage fluctuating power demands.
The project will span four years, with plans to install nearly 90 bidirectional charging points during this period.
