Geothermal energy options under investigation to power Dublin Airport
Ireland’s airport operator, daa, is looking at alternative, renewable, low-carbon energy sources to heat and cool Dublin Airport’s buildings. daa is investigating whether geothermal energy, in which heat within the earth’s core is used to power ground source heat pumps, could be used as a potential option.
Dublin Airport has now issued a tender for a feasibility study regarding geothermal energy, as well as an initial design for how it would operate at Dublin Airport. daa is seeking an outcome for this study in summer 2025.
By investigating such measures, Dublin Airport underscores their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The scheme joins their successful solar farm, which became operational in October – expecting to cover the electricity needs of the entire airfield at Dublin Airport.
