Copenhagen Airport launches study on jet fuel and emissions
Copenhagen Airport has launched a new research campaign called FuelTrack to understand better how the properties of jet fuel affect aircraft emissions and local air quality. The study is being carried out in collaboration with partners such as the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), SAS, and the EU-funded ALIGHT project. For two weeks, emissions will be measured in real conditions as aircraft taxi on the ground, while fuel samples and flight data are collected.
What makes this study unique is that it goes beyond the lab and looks at how different fuels behave during actual operations. Scientists are focusing on things like sulphur and aromatic content in the fuel and how these influence what comes out of the engines. This could be important for choosing cleaner fuels in the future.
The results, expected in autumn, will help evaluate the benefits of using more sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and may support future decisions on how to reduce the environmental impact of flying.
