Brussels Airport and skeyes collaborate on eco-friendly landing procedure
Brussels Airport and skeyes are partnering to conduct research aimed at developing eco-friendly landing procedures. This collaborative effort, supported by EUROCONTROL, is part of the HERON project, which is led by Airbus.
As active participants in the SESAR program, both skeyes and Brussels Airport are joining the HERON project to promote highly efficient and environmentally friendly air operations. The project involves numerous partners from across Europe and aims to enhance flight efficiency while reducing noise, flight delays, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions.
Under the HERON project, skeyes and Brussels Airport will validate operational flight demonstrations of green approaches. Specifically, they will introduce “Increased Second Glide Slopes (ISGS)” on two runways, thereby testing approaches at a slightly steeper descent angle. This solution, which has already been validated in the SESAR program, targets noise reduction and fuel efficiency and will be tested for the first time in a fully operational environment.
During the project kick-off meeting, skeyes, Brussels Airport, TUI fly, DHL, and Brussels Airlines expressed their support and outlined plans for real-life demonstrations of the new landing procedures at Brussels Airport, which are scheduled for 2024.
