Autonomous shuttle pilot enhances sustainability at Brussels Airport
Brussels Airport has launched a pilot of fully autonomous electric shuttles to investigate the potential of this innovative transport mode – as part of the European Stargate project.
The shuttles will be tested on a designated tarmac route and monitored by camera sensors. Each shuttle carries eight passengers and a safety steward. Fully electronic, the shuttles support the airport’s goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2030.
After the three-month test period, this project will be evaluated to assess whether autonomous mobility has a future at the airport and to identify the conditions and requirements involved. Brussels Airport will also evaluate the concrete benefits of self-driving transport and understand how employees perceive this mode of mobility in terms of safety, comfort, and other factors.
