Athens International Airport achieves net zero 25 years ahead of target
Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” (AIA) has officially completed its Route 2025 roadmap, aiming to achieve net zero for emissions under its control. The airport met its goal 25 years ahead of the industry-wide 2050 target.
AIA’s Route 2025 roadmap was put in place in 2019, with the aim of eliminating the airport’s carbon footprint through direct action rather than offsetting. The strategy focused on production of renewable energy for self-consumption, electrification of the vehicle fleet, energy storage systems and phasing out fossil fuel use across facilities. As a result, the airport now covers its energy needs with on-site solar generation and has significantly reduced emissions even as passenger traffic has grown.
The celebratory event held on the apron side of Athens International Airport brought together representatives from the European Commission (including Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas), prominent Greek political figures, and members of the European aviation industry, including ACI EUROPE’s Director General Olivier Jankovec. They all emphasised the importance of the achievement not only for Greece but also for Europe’s airport sector, serving as a leading example of effective climate action and emissions management.
