Airports and Airlines publish step-change findings as second anniversary milestone is passed
As the second anniversary of the declaration of the pandemic passed on 11th March, ACI EUROPE and IATA published research conducted by Oxera/Edge Health showing that travel restrictions are a blunt instrument against virus spread.
Following from individual analyses undertaken in Finland, the UK and Italy, the aviation bodies commissioned Oxera/Edge Health to expand their modelling on a pan-European basis. The result – even if a new variant were to be discovered and travel restrictions introduced immediately, this only delays the peak of infections by a minimum of four days.
Responding to these findings, ACI and IATA jointly called for Ministers of Transport and Health throughout EU Member States to remove health-related travel restrictions on intra EEA flights as a minimum, to align travel restrictions with national restrictions, and to introduce parity between those travelling with EEA and EMA approved vaccines.
