Aena extends support and incentives for regional airports
Aena, the Spanish airport operator, has extended their financial incentives for their airports and heliports with fewer than 3 million passengers. 17 of Aena’s airports and heliports meet this passenger number criteria, and have also been unable to recover their traffic to pre-pandemic levels. The incentive, covering summer and winter 2025-2026, aims to reduce the operating costs of these airports by 70%.
The new incentives consist of a 100% discount on airport security and PRM (passenger with reduced mobility) charges for additional passengers, compared with the equivalent season in 2023. The routes must be unique (not served by other airlines). These measures build on an existing incentive (2024-2026) for 32 airports and heliports, exempting airlines from passenger charges for any growth beyond 2023 levels, lasting three years. Routes to new destinations are also incentivised at airports with over 3 million passengers until March 2027. Additional discounts are provided for flights during low seasons in the Balearic and Canary Islands, as well as rebates for wide-body cargo aircraft.
Additionally, Aena’s Board of Directors has decided to extend the incentive for airlines operating at La Palma Airport until 2025 in order to promote tourism and consolidate the recovery of air traffic after the eruption of the volcano in the Cumbre Vieja natural park.
