ACI EUROPE launches Connectivity Report
On the eve of the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly 2024, the 2024 Airport Industry Connectivity Report was released. Highlighting the ongoing challenges in the recovery of European air connectivity, the Report spells out changed market dynamics for European airports.
Despite nearing a full recovery in passenger volumes, total air connectivity in Europe is still 14% below 2019 levels. This marks a modest improvement from last year’s 16% deficit, but indicates fewer and more expensive travel options for travellers. Istanbul (+9% v. 2019) leads Europe in direct connectivity, followed by Amsterdam-Schiphol (-6%) and London-Heathrow (-2%), which are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels.
Geopolitical tensions and structural market changes are shifting connectivity patterns and causing varied performances among individual national aviation markets and indeed airports, with major declines in connectivity noted in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and Israel. Leisure and Visiting Friends & Relatives (VFR) demand, along with the growth of Ultra Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs), have reshaped the connectivity landscape, with LCCs increasing their direct connectivity by 18% since 2019.
For the first time, ACI EUROPE has produced an interactive digital version of the Report, available here. Find out more in the full report and press release below.
