ACI EUROPE joins call on new EU leaders to confirm the Green Deal as Europe’s strategic priority
ACI EUROPE has joined over 500 signatories in calling for the Green Deal to be re-confirmed a key priority in the next EU cycle. The recent European elections will, very shortly, bring in a new cohort of 720 MEPs – and with them, a new European Commission for the next five years. Together, they will create, shape, and pass laws essential to all parts of the EU; and notably define the future of aviation policy in the bloc.
Europe’s airports have long been at the forefront of proactive climate action within the air transport sector, through initiatives such as the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, as well as broader industry alliances, including Destination 2050, and more recently taking active part in the European Commission’s Alliance for Zero-Emission Aircraft and Renewable and Low-Carbon Fuels Value Chain Industrial Alliance. The decarbonisation of air transport is an unprecedented challenge and needs an overarching framework for the whole industry to work towards. The EU Green Deal provided this necessary policy and legal certainty to advance the transformation, and while there are elements which still need to be improved and complemented, ACI EUROPE calls on EU leaders to stay the course.
Part and parcel of the joint call are the following specific action points requested of policymakers:
- Confirm the EU Green Deal as a top priority in the next EU Strategic Agenda and compliment it with a Clean Industrial Deal that is in line with Green Deal objectives;
- Align all EU financial instruments with the Green Deal objectives for 2030 and beyond including through a new Clean Industrial Deal Investment plan;
- Appoint an Executive Vice-President for both the Green and Industrial Deals
Through these measures, the much needed transition to a sustainable, circular and just economy can be undertaken in a way that secures Europe’s prosperity and competitiveness, and enables airports to continue delivering the socio-economic benefits linked to air connectivity – sustainably.
